 Massage is an ancient therapy and is defined as the manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes. Massage has both a physiological and a psychological effect. The various movements massage exerts, either individually or in combination, affect the skin, muscle, blood vessels, lymphatics, nerves and some of the internal organs, depending on the position and pressure of the movements involved. In general the pressure movements result in a speeding up of the body’s physiology, whilst slow, gentle massage movements have a soothing effect, calming the nerves and enabling the patient to relax.
Holistic massage can be a partial, or a whole body massage, (excluding the face and scalp). Nourishing oils are massaged into the body to create flexibility and relaxation. Gentle but firm acupressure may be applied if energy blocks are discovered in the body. The practitioner uses sense of touch to determine the correct amount of pressure to apply to each person and locate areas of tension and other soft-tissue problems. During holistic massage oxygen and nutrients are brought to the tissues more quickly improving the condition of the skin. Massage speeds up the removal of deoxygenated blood and waste products and this has the effect of relieving pain and stiffness of the muscles. This massage promotes general well-being and enhances self-esteem, while boosting the circulatory and immune systems to benefit blood pressure, circulation, muscle tone, digestion, and skin tone.
